1935_Lampaert cattle brand.tif Old file number: 200305021219.tif index: Lampaert, Adile title: Lampaert cattle brand 1935(c.) caption: Each animal in the herd received the Lampaert brand. The brand was Adile Victor Lampaert's initials, and was placed on the Hereford's left shoulder. Each animal was also tattooed with the brand in its ear, using a pair of pliers bearing needles dipped in ink. Each also wore a metal ear tag with a number identifying it as an individual in the herd. When the herd was ready to be sold, it was confined in the Lampaert stockyard corral and driven up a shoot onto a railway cattle car. The loading shoot was located halfway between what is today Tony Roma's restaurant and the old Gossard Lumber Company site. The cows were dehorned when they were young, so they didn't bleed excessively, but not too young, or the horns would just grown back. To create the symmetrically curved horns of the bulls, they were weighted down when they were young, a heavy hollow ball with a set screw being attached to each horn. Aesthetics aside, this prevented the bulls from seriously injuring one another. |
